On September 11, 1858, my great, great grandfather, Christian Klein, registered his cattle brand at the Gillespie County courthouse in Fredericksburg, Texas. He called his brand the “half-moon K.” Today, we use a modified version of this brand, which is the “half-moon K” with a circle around it. This serves as the holding brand and logo for Windy Bar Ranch.
Although my ancestors have been raising cattle in Gillespie County since the 1850s, we only started raising registered Angus in 1983. Since then, we’ve spent over thirty-seven years of careful observation and meticulous record-keeping to develop the genetics that go into our beef. That same care and attention to detail goes into every cut of beef we produce.
When you buy food from a local producer like Windy Bar Ranch, you cast a financial vote for ethically-raised, “non-industrial-farm” food. With our locally-raised beef, we leave a smaller carbon footprint, since we minimize the fossil fuels used to produce and transport our locally-raised beef. Also, we use minimal amounts of commercial fertilizer because all our manure is recycled naturally right here at the ranch. Although manure is a waste product at a commercial feedlot, it is highly-valued, natural fertilizer here at the ranch.
We have periodic ranch tours, and we welcome everyone to attend. There is no part of our operation a visitor cannot view. Once you see how we raise our beef, you will be a customer for life. Just let us know if you would like to attend a ranch tour, and we will put you on the list.
